Getting from Antigua to Lake Atitlán
The usual way into the region is the Interamericana, the CA-1 Occidente, with a turn toward Sololá and Panajachel. From Antigua you can take a shuttle, a chain of local buses or a car. From Guatemala City, the airport shuttle changes in Antigua. Once you are at the lake, boats take over: the roads along the shore do not all connect without detours.
The figures below come from operator pages and travel portals. Some of them contradict each other, and the tables say where. Confirm times and prices when you book.

Options compared
Published details for 2026. Where sources disagree, both values are shown.
| Option | From | Time | Departures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuttle, Antigua to Panajachel | $20 | 3 hours listed | 8:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m.; a 5:30 a.m. departure appears only in the header of the page |
| Shuttle, Guatemala City to Panajachel | $35 | About 6.5 hours in one place, about 4.5 hours in another, plus 1 hour in Antigua | 6:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. |
| Chicken bus | – | – | Antigua, Chimaltenango, Sololá, Panajachel, with changes; no published timetable |
| Own car | – | – | CA-1 Occidente, turn toward Sololá and Panajachel |
Because the 5:30 a.m. shuttle appears in only one place on the operator's page, do not count on it until the booking confirms it.
Shuttle from Antigua or Guatemala City
The simplest option with luggage.
Antigua to Panajachel
The shuttle runs daily from $20. Drop-off can be your lodging, the Tzanjuyú pier or the operator's office on Avenida Santander. The luggage allowance is one backpack or suitcase plus one handbag. Changes and cancellations are possible until at least 12 hours before departure.
Guatemala City to Panajachel
From $35, daily, with pickup at the airport or at a hotel in zone 10 or 13. The operator says you change in Antigua. The published duration contradicts itself, about 6.5 hours in the header and about 4.5 hours in the description, plus a one-hour stop in Antigua. Plan for the longer figure. For the first leg, see Guatemala City to Antigua.

Chicken bus and driving
A travel portal describes the bus route as Antigua, Chimaltenango, Sololá and Panajachel, with changes along the way. It publishes no operator timetable and no total fare, so treat it as a description of the chain, not a direct line. The US State Department advises against chicken buses and names crime and accidents as the reasons. A cheap ride is not the same as a safe one.
If you drive, take the CA-1 Occidente and turn toward Sololá and Panajachel. No toll, parking price or guaranteed driving time is published. The German Foreign Office recommends guarded parking lots and no valuables left in the car. Overnight parking at the pier and local access rules are not published, so ask your lodging.

Boats between the villages
Published routes, fares and times, and where they differ.
The published route
A boat association from San Juan lists a route that serves San Juan, San Pablo, San Marcos, Tzununá, Jaibalito, Santa Cruz and Panajachel, and back. San Pedro and Santiago are not on that list. The fare is Q25 (2025 listing), and the source does not set separate rates by nationality. A separate overview from January 2026 gives Q15 to Q25 per person.
Times
The published windows are 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from San Juan to Panajachel and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Panajachel to San Juan, with a boat about every 20 minutes. They are not guaranteed departures. For Panajachel to San Pedro, a trip report gives Q25 for tourists and about 45 minutes.
The last boat
Sources disagree. One gives 7:30 p.m. from Panajachel and 5:30 p.m. from San Pedro. Another says farther destinations stop around 5:30 p.m., with a few later boats until about 7 p.m. There is no single last boat for the lake. Ask on the day.

Life jackets and wind
Local transport advice asks you to wear a life jacket, with a correctly fitted one for children, to follow the captain's instructions and to stay seated if something goes wrong. A strong gust known as Xocomil can build on the lake. A boat capsized near Santa Cruz on 27 January 2026 and two Panamanian tourists died. Panamanian authorities pointed to strong gusts, but the press does not establish a single proven cause. A morning departure does not make a trip safe on its own.
Price and day planning
Fares depend on the route and the load, and no official 2026 fare table is published. Confirm the price before you board. Night service is not guaranteed.
Is Lake Atitlán safe?
What the travel advisories say, without drama.
Germany
The German Foreign Office points to the risk of robberies, also at the lake and on volcano hikes. After prison riots and attacks in January 2026 the notice describes a state of prevention, but it does not say that tourist sites are closed. It recommends volcano visits with the police or licensed guides.
United States
The State Department lists Guatemala at Level 3, reconsider travel (advisory of 12 March 2026). The excluded areas include the department of San Marcos, Huehuetenango, zone 18 of the capital and Villa Nueva. San Marcos La Laguna is on Lake Atitlán in Sololá and is not in the department of San Marcos.
What to do
Read the current notices before you travel, keep valuables to a minimum and wear a life jacket on every boat. For a wider view, see the Antigua safety guide.
Day trip to Chichicastenango
A short note, with details on the sister site.
The main market of Chichicastenango runs on Thursday and Sunday and can be reached from Panajachel in a day. An operator lists a round-trip shuttle on those days, leaving at 8:00 a.m. and returning at 2:00 p.m., with 1.5 hours each way, from $30 for the round trip. Pickup is in central Panajachel or at the Tzanjuyú pier.
